2/13/20, 7:00 PM BanjerDan’s DangerBand at Henfling’s Tavern!
I’m honored that Henfling’s Tavern asked me to put together a band for an evening, and thrilled that three very fine musicians have agreed to be my side pickers: Pete Hicks (The Central Valley Boys) on mandolin and fiddle, Jim Lewin (Great American Taxi) on guitar, and Chad Bowen (AJ Lee & Blue Summit) on bass!

“BanjerDan’s DangerBand” is so named because I never know from gig to gig who the side musicians will be, and it’s mostly unrehearsed. I call upon musicians who I know are solid players and who know a lot of bluegrass/country standards, and I act as host and choose the first and last two songs. Otherwise the show is structured like a bluegrass jam session, where each picker gets to choose a song in turn, so we create the set list and arrangements pretty much on the spot. That’s the “danger,” and the audience gets to watch us try not to crash and burn!

I met Pete Hicks in the year 2000, when the Brookdale Bluegrass Festival was still being held at the Brookdale Lodge. Pete was at after-hours jam session in the attic of the Lodge, along with Frank Solivan II, (Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, formerly with the U.S. Navy’s Country Current) who I’d met earlier in the day. It was an insanely good and fun jam, and Pete told me he happened to have a recording session scheduled the next day. He asked if I’d like to be on it, and since I had a day or so off the road I eagerly accepted. The next morning I accompanied Pete to Jim Lewin’s place. Jim was the engineer, and he blew me away with his guitar playing! The session was eventually released as “Upstairs Jam,” and it remains among my favorite recordings.

Chad Bowen is a new friend I know because he plays in my favorite new band, AJ Lee & Blue Summit! We’ve never picked together before, but I’ve heard him play enough to know he can handle anything I might throw at him.

“BanjerDan’s DangerBand” at Revolution Cafe!
Most of my shows are as a solo performer, so on the rare occasions that I have the opportunity to put a band together, I call it “BanjerDan’s DangerBand,” because the personnel changes almost every time! For my debut at The Revolution Cafe in San Francisco’s Mission District, I’m very happy to have Yosef and Katya Tucker on guitar and bass. Yosef is the very talented lead singer and guitarist in TWO great California bands: The Bow Ties and The Central Valley Boys.
